Porta Angusta is a Bible reader for people who want to read the Word carefully — and want their tools to keep up. Two complete canons live inside the app: the King James Version and the Douay-Rheims (Challoner revision, all 73 books). No account, no tracking, and reading, searching and journaling all work fully offline.

What's inside

Read

Switch between the King James and the Douay-Rheims, or read them side by side. Adjustable text size, dark theme, a verse of the day. Tap to highlight, double-tap to hear aloud, or listen to a whole chapter.

Type any word or reference. A live statistics panel breaks every search into Old Testament vs New Testament, then drills into per-book and per-chapter counts, and can compare how a word is used across both translations. Pin searches you return to often.

People & Places

Hundreds of named persons and places, automatically discovered from the KJV text. Each one has a summary card showing total mentions, distinct books, first and last reference, and the peak book — plus an arc diagram tracing the canonical journey. A study starting point, not a curated reference.

Journal & Library

Voice or type your reflections and attach as many verses as you like. File notes, saved verses, searches and conversations into one folder tree, search everything you've written, and export a full backup as JSON, text or PDF.

Study assistant (optional)

Ask about a passage or your own reflection using your own Anthropic (Claude) or OpenAI (GPT) API key. Ask one model, compare two, or let them respond to each other. Expand, listen to, and save any answer to your journal with the question that prompted it. Off until you add a key.

Privacy

There is no account, no telemetry and no developer server. Your journal, saved verses and searches live on your device and, if you turn on iCloud, in your own iCloud account. The optional study assistant is the one feature that sends anything to a third party: when you use it, your question goes directly from your device to the AI provider whose key you added, after you've agreed to it. Open source

The core Porta Angusta reader is released under the MIT licence. The Douay-Rheims is in the public domain, and the King James Version is in the public domain in the United States.
