Porta Angusta — The Narrow Gate · KJV & Douay-Rheims Bible

The developer of Porta Angusta collects no personal data. There are no accounts, no analytics, no telemetry, no advertising identifiers, and no tracking or advertising SDKs, and the developer runs no servers of any kind. Reading, searching and journaling work fully offline.

Information leaves your device in only four situations, each of which you control: iCloud and iCloud Drive sync to your own Apple account, the optional AI study assistant, voice dictation, and backup files you choose to share. Each is described below.

What stays on your device

Your journal reflections, saved verses, pinned searches, folders, AI conversation history and reading preferences are stored in the app's local storage on your device. Uninstalling the app deletes that local copy.

iCloud sync

If you are signed into iCloud and iCloud is enabled for Porta Angusta in Settings, your journal reflections, saved verses, pinned searches, folders and reading preferences are mirrored to Apple's iCloud key-value store, so they appear on your other devices and return if you reinstall. That data lives in your personal iCloud account under Apple's privacy policy; the developer cannot access it. When you delete a reflection, only its identifier and the time of deletion are kept, so the deletion reaches your other devices — never its text. Turning iCloud off for the app stops the mirroring and leaves the copy on your device untouched.

If iCloud Drive is also on for Porta Angusta, two things are kept in the app's folder in your iCloud Drive: your AI conversation history, so it returns if you reinstall and follows you to your other devices, and a complete backup saved once a day, of which the 14 most recent are kept. Both are ordinary files you can see in the Files app under iCloud Drive › Porta Angusta, and both stay in your iCloud account under Apple's privacy policy; the developer cannot access them. When you delete a conversation, only its identifier and dates are kept so the deletion reaches your other devices — never its question or answer. If iCloud Drive is off for the app, conversations stay on your device only and no automatic backups are made.

Optional AI study assistant (bring your own key)

The assistant is off until you add your own API key from Anthropic (Claude) or OpenAI (GPT). The key is stored in the iOS Keychain on your device and is used only to authenticate your requests directly with that provider at api.anthropic.com or api.openai.com. It is never sent to the developer.

The first time you ask a question with each provider, the app shows exactly what will be sent and asks for your permission. When you ask, the following goes directly from your device to the provider you chose:

• your question and the app's instructions to the model;
• if "Include reading context" is on, the passage, translation and verse you are reading and your recent search;
• if you ask from inside a reflection, the text of that reflection;
• if "Share previous answers across models" is on, earlier answers from the same conversation;
• in Republic mode, which has the two models respond to each other, each model's answer is sent to the other provider — that is how the mode works, whether or not answer sharing is on;
• when an answer is continued so it can finish, or you tap Expand, the answer so far is sent back to the provider that wrote it.

The provider receives and processes that information under its own terms and privacy policy (Anthropic, OpenAI), including any retention those policies describe, and usage is billed to the account that owns the key. If you use a key supplied by someone else — for example a church or study group — that key's owner manages the provider account and may be able to see usage and billing information for it. Please don't include personal details in a question that you wouldn't want the provider to receive.

Your questions and answers are saved in the assistant's history so you can review them — on your device, and in your own iCloud Drive if it is on for the app (see above) — and are included in backups. You can delete individual conversations or clear the history at any time, and removing your key turns the assistant off entirely.

Microphone & speech recognition

The microphone and speech-recognition permissions are requested only when you tap the dictation button. Your speech is converted to text by Apple's speech-recognition service; depending on your device and language, Apple may process the audio on its servers under Apple's privacy policy. Porta Angusta does not record audio to a file, keep audio, or send audio anywhere itself. Only the text you choose to keep is saved.

Reading aloud & copying

Verses, chapters, reflections and assistant answers are read aloud with the speech voices built into iOS, on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere to do this, and your choice of voice and reading speed stays on this device.

Copy places text on the iOS clipboard. If Handoff is turned on, iOS may make it available on your other Apple devices through Universal Clipboard; the app sends it nowhere itself.

Backups: export & import

Export writes your data — reflections, saved verses, pinned searches, folders, preferences and AI conversation history — to a JSON, text or PDF file and hands it to the iOS share sheet. Nothing is sent until you choose where the file goes (Files, AirDrop, Mail, a cloud drive, a study leader), and what happens to it afterwards is up to you and that destination. Import reads a backup file you pick and merges it with what is already on the device; nothing already saved is removed. Separately, when iCloud Drive is on for the app, a complete backup in the same JSON format is saved automatically once a day to your own iCloud Drive, as described above.

The Bible texts

The King James Version and the Douay-Rheims Bible (1899 American Edition, Challoner revision) ship inside the app. The Douay-Rheims is in the public domain. The King James Version is in the public domain in the United States; in the United Kingdom it remains under perpetual Crown copyright administered by Cambridge University Press.

Children

The developer does not collect information from anyone, including children. The optional AI assistant generates responses using third-party models and requires an API key from Anthropic or OpenAI, each of which sets its own minimum age for its accounts.
